I was sitting at my desk today eating an excellent sandwich I made when my cell rings. Two words are on the screen “Private Number”. I don’t know about other countries, but when those words show up on your caller ID in Canada, it isn’t good.
So they found the CX-3 today, ridiculously close to my house(!). Some fucking crackheads really did a number on it. Cigarette ash inside AND out. Everything is damaged/worn/dirty. It makes me want to cry as I lovingly detailed it the night it was stolen.
Crawled under and it looks like there are some fresh gouges in some of the suspension bits (shiny metal exposed). Insurer expects us to pay for mechanical inspections, so that will be great.
Vehicle was locked and insurers took my keys so I couldn’t open it up.
Perhaps it’s still bad enough to be written off? Looks like it will need a lot of work. All front panels are misaligned, seatbelts slashed, shift boot cut, scratches all over, all 4 rims heavily damaged, all 4 tires damaged. They cut the seatbelts to stop the “no seatbelt” warning it looks like. Pity they didn’t get hurt.
God only knows about the mechanicals. Looks like they ramped it off something.
Even though this wasn’t a unique car or a “jalop car” it still really hurts me to see it like this. We gave it a good life and for it to be taken like that.... really sucks. I was proud to buy this at 24 and really happy my wife’s first car ever was something so nice and safe.
I think my current plan is:
1) See how this plays out. May still be a write off. The insurer, ICBC, is pretty liberal with paying out vehicles.
2) Still go for the wagon? I have to plan with my wife on the strategy moving forward.

Well that freakin’ sucks!

I’m so sorry. Looks rough.
The seatbelt is what really gets me. Why
???
Did somebody get stuck and have to cut their way out? I’m so confused.

I have no clue how I’d speak to people that acted like this. Thankfully, I’ve never confronted people acting like this (people that took the CX-3). Like, bro, that’s wrong? Tell them you hope they overdose and die? Tell them to please stop?
I’m glad it’s back and not stripped, but yikes.

“Why couldn’t you just have taken my neighbour’s WRX?”
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:03 |

I’ll guess $10,000 in repairs.
Sorry they found it. Probably should have just driven it into a river.

Probably the same crowd.*
(* For older, modified ones before someone with a 2019 STI Limited confronts me).
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:05 |

I’d say maybe a bit more? My estimate (I’m no expert) would be $15K.
Rims and the headlight are not cheap units, then labour in Vancouver is quite expensive.
I will share the estimate amounts when I receive it.

The crackheads that stole your car are vile pieces of shit
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:10 |

Fuck dude, I'm sorry. That's shitty to go through. And unfortunately, if the forensic team took a look at it and didn't find anything, there are no cameras, and no witnesses, it'll likely be a "conclude here" file.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:11 |

How on earth do you damage a car this much in a couple weeks??
It doesn’t even seem like they stop it for any particular purpose other than to ruin something nice...

The river awaits.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:13 |

I’d find the one who stole it, be nice and let him have it.
plot twist, there’ s a claymore that explodes when he goes over 35mph
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:15 |

Oh I know that, that’s OK. They didn’t look at it at all actually.
To be honest, I’m of two minds about it.
Mind 1: It’s just property, it’s fully insured, there is worse stuff going on, especially in my area right now. I’d rather they focus on important things.
Mind 2: A stolen car is a dangerous thing. My greatest fear is that our car would be involved in an accident that killed someone while it was stolen. Other than that, they are often used for misc. crimes.
Not to mention, if not taken seriously, it will just happen again and again which is a drain on society/insurers.
I kinda wish it was taken more seriously (I never met with any officer, nor did they look at the car when recovered), but then again, see mind 1.

Oh, as an aside, there was footage, but not very good. It was on night mode at the time.

![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:24 |

I’ m feeling a decidedly non-Christian need to find the jack holes who did this and beat them to within an inch of their lives.
I hope they make your life easier and write it off. If they do force you to repair it, it’s more work for you, but I can say from experience that you can get it back to like new with no down stream consequences if you stay on top of the repairs.
FWIW, I do think this a jalop car.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:26 |
|
Damn, that sucks!!!!
I’m thinking it will probably be totaled, which is good. I trust you to exhaustively list out everything that needs to be replaced, which sounds like half the interior at the very least. I’m thinking even just the seat belts, quarter panel, and wheels and tires would put you close to totaling territory.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:27 |
|
I’m thinking so too. Not pulling my deposit on the Sportwagen, that’s for sure.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:28 |

Probably not enough damage to write off, but yeah, it’s like a violation. Someone smacked into my 300D long ago and ran - motherfucker.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:29 |
|
Ouch, that’s rough. Here’s hoping it’s totaled, if that makes everything easier for you. It was a good looking car before this mess!
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:34 |

If it's close enough here, they'll sometimes give you the option for a payout
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:35 |

tire sidewall and wheel damage plus some gouges under looks like a hard hit curb ride, ala GTA foolery.
Hope their eventual future cellmates punch them hard in the dick for this.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:35 |
|
Honestly sucks that they found it. Hopefully they just total it out.
As an aside based on your story, I started prototyping a prox key that would go to sleep (basically would be unboostable if the key hadn’t been physically moved for a couple of minutes using a cellphone accelerometer ). Got pretty far down the road, and discovered Ford UK has just announced a similar system (like a month ago haha... so no license to print money for me ). Apparently Mercedes and Jaguar have similar systems but they have a slightly different implementation.
In any case you may be able to retrofit a new key on to a replacement vehicle so this doesn’t happen again.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:38 |
|
It seems excessive but a faraday bag would work too.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:40 |
|
Cellphone accelerometer is $2.50 in quantity, and the draw is low. It’s probably $5 per key more (and likely less) with full scale production.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:42 |
|
Damn. That blows that they found it. Do you have GAP insurance on it? How much is owed? Wonder what the figure would be to total it out. It’s a shame they didn’t blow the airbags, that would have totaled it for sure.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:43 |

That really sucks. *hug*
![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:45 |

![]() 08/22/2019 at 20:51 |

It’s paid off, no gap or replacement cost but ACV will cover it, so all good on that front.

I really hope you’re right!!
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:00 |

Damn man, that sucks! Poor thing....it’s in a bad way. I can’t see that the insurance would repair it, the seatbelts alone will be a lot of money I’d think, considering they are a safety item...
Hell knows what damage lurks underneath and it’s going to need a whole new front end...
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:11 |
|
Damn, if this somehow isn’t a write off, I definitely wouldn’t want it back after “repairs”. I cant believe trash people can trash a car this much in just a week or so.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:26 |
|
I would be shocked if that wasn’t totaled, the headlight looks to be $400 CAD and the wheels alone are over $1300, add tires and you’re at $2000. That’s not labour or any of the other parts and you’re close to $2500 CAD.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:36 |

I’m glad you got closure and I’m sorry the police response has been so lame. Kind of interesting though how much/the kind of damage these people did, maybe there are some clues inside. I guess that’s what happens when you literally drive it like you stole it.
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:47 |

Believe it or not, the seat belts for these appear to only be $215 a piece (USD). The headlight, on the other-hand ... I believe this has the available LED headlights which are $785 a piece (USD).
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:53 |

Ouch....not sure if his had LED lights or not!
![]() 08/22/2019 at 21:56 |

Daaaaaaaaaang it..
I wish it hadn’t been found, and you could always think of it as freshly detailed.
Hope it doesn’t throw a wrench into your plans, I would suggest you talk to our resident Oppo expert in all things insurance and icbc but um, yeah...
So, what VW mods you got planned?
![]() 08/22/2019 at 22:07 |
|
Assuming that’s it’s probably worth 13-15k.
Wheels 1800, shift boot 50, outer tie rods 50, set of OEM tires 500, headlight (350 used), driver’s fender 250, splash gaurd 35, fender liner 35, seatbelt assembly x 2 (50 0), bumper cover 250. driver’ fog light 100, paint for fender and bumper 12 00, I would insist they damaged the brake pads/rotors (250 ish ), if you need a hood thats 500 + paint, odor removal (insist on this) and detail 500.
Make sure that you make to go after diminished value if they insist that it’s not totaled.
By my count it’s about $ 5-6000 before labor. It’s probably going to be right on the edge. If they say it’s worth 10 and the repairs at 8k, tell them it’s worth 8 with diminished value from having from a theft recovery on it’s record. That may put them over the edge. Worth a try.
In the end, you could always take the fixed car back and trade it in. Frankly, I wouldn’t want it back - as I’m sure you don’t either. In a weird way, it’s been violated. I would trade it in and cash the dimished value check for a down payment on a new car.

This is where you decide to buy a dash camera with an interior facing unit, and hook it up to the car's internet connection so it's uploading footage when someone gets in.

![]() 08/22/2019 at 23:06 |

Bloody hell, that’s rough. Hope they total it. I wouldn’t want to get my car back, no matter how good the repairs were, after something like that.
Remember it freshly detailed.

![]() 08/23/2019 at 07:26 |

simple, DEMAND a payout due to the cigarette smoke/ash left behind.
also swab it for meth/ice
if you an your wife aren’t smokers you will notice it no matter how much it gets detailed etc.
you shouldn’t be paying for a mechanical inspection, that’s what insurance is suppose to cover.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 07:34 |

Maybe there’s some frame damage as well (fingers crossed for you). Or a window or two has broken mysteriously since it was found (damn hooligans).
![]() 08/23/2019 at 08:47 |

I would assume it a write off. The way the panel gaps are all over the place makes me think you’re right about it being airborne at some point, horribly twisting the unibody. Write off. Slashed seatbelts, write off. Strange that the airbags didn’t blow, given the amount of damage.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 08:57 |

This totalled my V8 4x4 4runner:
No damage to interior or seatbelts, no airbag deployment, no tire/wheel damage, drove straight as an arrow back home and to the body shop
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:19 |

How do you even?
That really sucks. And this isn’t just joyriding, this is wanton destruction.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:20 |

yea, but thats a much older truck...blue book might have been low enough for thta to screw it.
with that down on paper, there is also a lot more damage to the CX-5. I hope they total it out
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:23 |
|
Payout was something like $13.5k
The V8 4x4's are holding their value ridiculously well. Switched to a GX 470 because they were the same price and more easily available.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:25 |

Damn joyride ugh.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:29 |

That sucks! I’m really sorry, sucks to find your car like that.
As others have said, it’s screwed up enough that I hope they just total it, for your sake. I don’t know how things work up there, but most US states now have a law that they can total a vehicle at 75% (or something like that).
IF they do decide to fix it, one thing I would look into is taking it to the police and having a drug dog sniff it, just to make sure the thiefs didn’t leave behind any fun substances.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:31 |
|
Man. That sucks. At least it’s mostly in one piece...
Personally, I’d push to get it totaled out. They definitely were beating on that poor car and probably jumped it a few times.
Also, that sucks that they’re making you pay for inspection. Are they reimbursing your at least?
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:37 |

The same thing happened to our suburban when it was stolen. Joyride city. Thankfully, they did a dumb that prevented more damage. It had a pushbar on the front with lights on it, and in an attempt to mask its distinctiveness
they tore it off and in the process cut the wire for the 9th injector installed for the supercharger which put the car into lean run and made the ECU go into limp mode so they really couldn’t hoon it. It stank and had some minor damage but it was picked up pretty quickly and it was sorted pretty quickly. Sorry about this. Its kind of a worst case. Getting the car back damaged like this and maybe having to live with a heavily repaired vehicle is no good.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:38 |
|
I wouldn’t want that car back, and I’m sure my wife would refuse it even if it’s fixed.
Seems like there’s a very good chance they’ll total it - good luck. What a shitty week for the two of you.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:39 |
|
But like.... seriously. How do they have the tech to clone a key and then just hoon the crap out of this thing ? It seems... unlikely that someone that had the resources to buy a key cloner, which aren’t terribly expensive I realize, and then do this to the cars they steal wouldn’t... just spend that money on drugs? I am so confused.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 11:45 |

My wife is not going to take it back if they don’t write it off. It’s fucked inside and we keep our cars spotless.
![]() 08/23/2019 at 12:15 |

Shit! That looks really bad.
Can you bring your own evaluator to write off the car?
Or do you have to stick with the one from your insurance company?
![]() 08/23/2019 at 12:33 |
|
That’s absolutely unbelievable, they must have headed north and done some serious offroading. There’s a special place in hell for fuckers that de stroy someone’s property. You’ll l ove the wagon :)
![]() 08/23/2019 at 12:41 |
|
I’m sorry, but what dimwit cuts a seatbelt? If you’re so safety-averse that you don’t want to drive with a seatbelt, just click it in and sit in front of it/on it. Heck, sometimes seatbelts are even long enough to wrap behind the seat. Seems cutting the belt is way more work than either of those things
How is that wheel with a whole chunk missing even holding air? I hope the seatbelts and wheels alone (IIRC, seatbelts aren’t exactly a cheap thing to replace) total it out. Glad the car is back in safe hands...just hope you’ll never have to drive it again.

As the owner of two Mazdas with proximity keys (a 2013 CX-5 and a 2016 6), this makes me nervous and even more glad that both of our cars stay in a locked garage at night.
Man. People suck. I really hope they total this so you don’t have to deal with it anymore.
And, I’m sorry to see y’all leave the Mazda world, but those Sportwagens are sweet!
![]() 08/23/2019 at 15:17 |

Liability is one big reason insurers total out otherwise fixable cars. Remind them of this fact if they balk.

![]() 08/23/2019 at 17:50 |

![]() 08/23/2019 at 17:52 |

I know, this is the worst case scenario for our claim.
Medium damage, recovered after a week and half means we are running low on loss of use (rental coverage) and we put a deposit on a wagon.
Just gotta play the cards you’re dealt.
![]() 08/26/2019 at 14:49 |
